I fell sick for months after ringing in the new year. Mono or not, my immune system was shot; consequently I felt ill and exhausted all the time. Laying in bed, wasting precious vacation on sick days, finding it so much harder to keep up with social obligations, I fell into a downswing. I became content being alone, wanting to self isolate like the shark swimming to the bottom of the sea in the Unknown Mortal Orchestra song. My social anxiety was back, and it bubbled up even in the presence of my partner. Using my limited social and physical energy to address problems proved fruitless and maybe even counterproductive.
